' You should always follow your passion,' is an advice often heard in motivational speeches. Our working careers will consume most of our lives, so we might as well do something we enjoy. When you really enjoy what you do, nothing will stop you from getting your work done. No one knows that better than Nathan Sawaya who makes the most fantastic sculptures with LEGO. He used to work as a lawyer, but several years ago he made a huge switch and started to do what really makes him happy: making art with LEGO bricks. I saw his exhibition in Oostende and I was blown away. His work is inspiring and moving, and it did make me think about my own passion; movies and in particular editing. However, I don't think I will ever be brave enough to make the decision Nathan Sawaya made. Am I talented enough to make ends meet as an editor? Probably not. But I found a middle ground between duty and creativity. Yes, sometimes my part-time daytime job is draining and dull, but I realize that not every day is going to be an enjoyable one. When I get home I have a creative outlet, and I'm thankful for that. I get a few editing jobs know and then, but I will probably never get to edit that blockbuster movie. And you know what? That's fine with me. If I want to create something, I will make it happen. In my mind everything I create, as small as it may seem to others, is a big deal. I poured my heart and soul in it, and it matters to me. Because it's my passion.
